My first cake!

To be truthful, I don't think I've ever baked a proper sized cake and iced it and served it all by myself. Like, someone else will have made the icing, or it was cupcakes and I don't really count them. But I had six friends come over yesterday to camp out in a twelve-man tent in our garden and cake seems to be a pretty good food to serve for it. I decided to take photos of the baking process to document it because, let's be honest, it's a pretty monumental occasion.

(Please, let's ignore the cling film in the last shot; I was far too lazy to remove it for a photo)

As you can see - hopefully! - it's a chocolate cake and I believe it was a Nigella Lawson recipe. I've never met anyone called Nigella actually, it's a bit of a weird name, isn't it? It's just like Nigel really. Anyway, the icing is just standard buttercream icing with a splash of red food colouring and a drop or two of vanilla extract. And, well, the cherries were just left over in the cupboard, only four of them, so I thought they'd make a nice addition to the, um, masterpiece.

I realise seventeen years old is a bit late to make your first cake without any assistance but I'm not very competent in the kitchen so I'm a little bit proud. Are you a regular baker? Oh, and can anyone do the beautiful looking piping of icing, because I'd love to learn!

Happy Sunday guys.
