I know I'm not laying the photos out perfectly yet, or coming up with inventive, witty titles, but I'm still learning!

Revlon: Lip Butter

I wrote a wishlist of beauty products at the start of the summer and I'm pleased to say I've now managed to buy everything on it (a whole four items, whoa). I've been waiting a while to write this post because I didn't have any decent photos of me wearing the lip butter and, although I have taken some now, I'm still not entirely happy. I don't think the lighting will ever get any better than it is in these photos though, so I'll just have to live with it!

I bought the product in the colour candy apple and I love it. I love how it's so pigmented yet also moisturising, and I love that I can wear it to work (woohoo, McDonald's) to stop me from looking like I've just crawled out of bed, but that it doesn't look like I've made a ridiculous effort. All in all, it's the perfect lip product for me. 10/10.

Let me live that fantasy

A couple of days ago, I wrote a post about how much I wanted a pair of black ankle boots. My classes finished early yesterday and one of the perks of my school is that it's ten minutes' walk from a New Look so I went down there with my friends and bought a pair. New Look's range of shoes right now is so fab, you should definitely go and take a peek! I've been wearing these boots around the house all of last night and today, they're practically glued to my feet.

Can you tell I'm excited?

Gone are the days of summer

"I don't know how I looked but I know how I felt: young, goofy, infinite." - John Green

Summer is now well and truly over. Apologies for making this photo so large but I really wanted to talk about it. (Also please excuse my friend's drink - I've promised myself I'll never pose for a photo with alcohol but since I'm not holding it here, it doesn't count!) This picture was taken at a party in mid-July, just a couple of months ago. It features me, my best friend, Lola, on the right, one of my closest guy friends in the middle, and a friend we've all got to know more recently on the left. It was a farm themed party (hence the checked shirts on the boys) so Lola and I came as cats. I believe you can also spot a straw hat in the background.

What immediately struck me about this photo is how happy we all look. We danced all night (to the best song ever...), sang a lot, ate huge amounts of pizza, and spoke to about a hundred people. At the time, I was like hey, this is an okay party, I'm having fun. When I got home, I realised how fab it had actually been and what wonderful people I'd been lucky enough to spend the night with. It also made me think, we've only got a year of this left. In September next year, we'll all be off to uni (MK, the guy on the left, I'm 99% sure, will end up at Cambridge). We have to make the most of our time together now - cheese alert! - and I think we've made a pretty good start at doing that. This photo captures our joyful mood on the night perfectly for me.

That's why I love it. It sums up everything I want to remember my teenage years for: strong friendships, happiness, youth, dancing, and smiles. Our time is here.

Black ankle boots

I wish this was a post to say "hey guys, guess what, I got some really cute black ankle boots, check them out!!!" It's not. It's a post to say "hey guys, guess what, I desperately want some really cute black ankle boots, check out which ones I want very much".

http://www.newlook.com/

What I love most about these is the height of the heel. It's high enough to make a casual outfit just that little bit more dressy, yet not so high that you couldn't wear it to school without looking stupid. While I prefer the Marks and Spencers ones (I think the elasticated bit looks even classier!) I'll probably end up buying the New Look pair - mainly because they're £40 cheaper at just £25. I think that's such a bargain so I hope I can pop down there later this week.

This cover is absolutely incredible. Yep, the original is really great but the harmonies in this version give me such shivers and I've had huge girl crushes on Orla and Lauren for bloody ages so for them to collaborate is a dream come true! There's a free download of it, there's something about it on my twitter.

Velvet dress

A couple of weeks ago I popped into TK Maxx and found a lovely dress in my size, and they didn't have any more of it (that's the TK Maxx way, I suppose). At risk of sounding like a wannabe hipster, it's always really nice when you know a shop's only sold one of something and you've got it, isn't it?

I really like the contrast of the sheer material with the velvet and I also love anything purple right now so that's another box ticked. I feel like it's a bit of a formal dress but I could probably wear it to school with a chunky knit cardigan and boots or something. I'll experiment. Does anyone else shop in TK Maxx at all?

What came first...

This is my uniform for McDonald's. Since yesterday morning, I've spent sixteen hours working in it which, if you ask me, is far too bloody long. I can't even wiggle my toes right now, they hurt so much from all the being on my feet.

I hope you've all had a really relaxing weekend and a lovely Sunday evening.

40 Days of Dating: Review

I found out about 40 Days of Dating today. Click the link to read more about it. Perhaps I'm a bit behind on the times because it's been around for a few months, but better late than never, hey? I gather the last four days of the tale have only been released recently anyway so maybe I'm not that late. Anyway, I sat down for three hours today and read the whole website. I was glued to my laptop, totally enthralled. So I wanted to write down my thoughts about it, and I suppose it will turn into a review of sorts.

Two friends named Jessica and Timothy live in New York City and have been friends for four years. There's always been an attraction between them but they've basically put each other in the friend zone and have never really been single at the same time - until earlier this year. Jessie tends to fall in love quickly and demand too much too soon from a relationship, while Tim is a bit of a commitment-phobe and dates around a lot. They wonder if, just by spending every day for forty days with one person, you can start to feel romantically attached to them. So they decide to put this theory to the test with each other.

They come up with a set of rules: they have to see each other every day, they'll see a therapist every week, they'll document the whole thing for their blog, they'll go on three dates a week, they'll go on a weekend trip together, and they won't be romantically involved with anyone else for the forty days. I'll say it now: for me, their seeing a couples' therapist every week ruined it. What normal couple sees a therapist right from the word go? I'm pretty sure it's because Jessie has her own private therapist and Tim has had one before that they felt it necessary to have every thought and move of theirs analysed by a "specialist". And I got the impression it tore them apart. Whatever, anyone reading their website could have told them what their therapist did. Anyway, I digress.

Right from the beginning, I can't say I warmed to either of them. I thought Tim was, essentially, a bit of a dick, really bossy, and pushed Jessie into a lot of things she wasn't necessarily keen on. I thought Jessie was obsessive, jumped to ridiculous conclusions, and - I'll say it - weak. But I loved the project and the whole idea they'd come up with so I kept reading. For three hours. It takes a lot of time to read both Jessie's and Tim's account of each of the forty days and watch all the videos, but I'd say it's definitely worth it.

Their affair begins as you would expect - they're just two friends spending a lot of time together. After a week, they actually begin to see each other in a more romantic way, both admitting their feelings for the other. Is this because they actually like each other, or is it because of how much they've been seeing each other? I'm inclined to go with the latter but feel free to make up your own mind. About two weeks in, Jessie's already-frequent headaches take a turn for the worse and it negatively impacts on her relationship with Timothy. Don't worry, they get things back on track (or there would be no website dedicated specially to their affair) and start acting like a real couple.

I loved that stage of the project but, just like any chick flick film, you know the seemingly perfect period can't last forever and something bad is coming. And, well, they don't end up together. I would like to say it's a shame, but you know what, Jessie can do so much better. Although it wasn't her decision to end their relationship, things turned out best for her. She's only twenty six; she still has plenty of time to find someone and settle down and, while I resent people who jump too quickly into relationships, I resent thirty two year old men unable to commit to a relationship even more - Tim. If he couldn't make it work with Jessie, and hasn't made it work with any of his previous girlfriends (he's dated 64 or 65 women, I think) then I don't really think he has much of a shot. Maybe I'm being harsh, but I really didn't like the way he came across.

Let me know if you've heard of it, or read it, or are reading it now. I'd love to hear your views and what you thought of Jessie and Tim. Happy reading!

First weekend on the job

You may or may not know that I managed to land myself my first ever properly paying job at McDonald's recently. I applied just over three weeks ago, had my interview the day afterwards, and three days later, completed my orientation for which I got two hours pay. I had my first day there three days ago, on Saturday.

I worked an eight hour shift from 11am until 7pm and oh my God, I've never been so tired. I work "on lobby" as a Customer Care Assistant which is essentially a glorified cleaner. I was a bit worried about feeling awkward and like not-one-of-the-team but everyone has been mega lovely and I already love the people I work with, just after two days. I was thrown in at the deep end though: the shift manager introduced himself and took me out to the lobby (the main eating area). He told me that red cloths were for food surfaces and blue cloths were for everything else. Then he said "alright, I'll just leave you to it then" and pottered back into the kitchen. I was meant to have someone training me but she decided just not to show up so I was on my own for almost two hours before a replacement person I'll refer to as M arrived.

I'd been warned about M by two girls there before my shift began. They said he's intensely annoying (they were right), that he lies about everything (they were right), and that he gets everything wrong (they were right). Example: he told me that our deputy shift manager had got eight McDonald's employees pregnant this year. He also told me the reason little pots of milk for tea and coffee are kept in the kitchen is because people (grown adults, he said) would pour them over the table for fun. I'm about 99% sure it's because the milk needs to be kept in a fridge but hey, you know, I've only been there one weekend, what do I know? (More than M, I can tell you that right now). He also looks exactly like the guy from Up and comes up to my chin in height, despite being 21 years old.

M aside, I had a pretty good time. I kind of enjoyed myself - is that weird? The eight hours passed really quickly and I made friends with lots of the other employees (well, as friendly as you can be for having known each other for two days, though I did get a massage from a guy named Oasis). Sunday was pretty much the same except I worked from 8am until 4pm. M started work at 4pm so I didn't have to work with him, praise be, and was with a lady called Vik instead. She's worked in the business for twenty years, she says, and actually knows what she's doing so she told me how things work. Oh, except it's her who flaked out on me on Saturday because she "didn't have the money to get into work". She smokes non-stop, so um, I guess that's where her travel money is going. Priorities.

I can see I've done a lot of moaning but it's alright. Sunday passed faster than Saturday did so I'm hoping that will continue in the coming months until the days whiz by (wishful thinking). I ached so much yesterday. Cleaning tables, mopping floors, wiping tiles, changing bin bags, running out Drive Thru orders, sweeping lobbies, and stocking up napkins and straws really does take it out of you. Also, I got my hand stuck in the serviette dispenser and now have two rather attractive looking scabs on my knuckles. All in all, not bad for a first weekend. If you guys have jobs, tell me about them, I'd love to hear!

Yet more lace

I wasn't joking when I said I was really into lacy clothes at the moment.

This is something else I bought when I was in Germany a couple of weeks ago. The chances of me pairing it with this grey skirt are very slim because I think I'll predominantly be wearing this to school and I want to look a bit more casual for that. I also got a nude coloured vest-style top to wear underneath because I'm not sure this by itself complies with the school dress code. It reminds me a lot of my prom dress I bought for next year but I'll just have to hope people don't notice that I seem to be wearing lots of lacy things.

Anyway, I should probably get back to crying over my personal statement. My form tutor wants a first draft of it by tomorrow morning but I don't think that's going to happen since I've only written about 1,300 characters in a whole week. If you're writing yours too, good luck.

Live like a saviour, live like the stars

When I was in Germany last week, I visited a huge shopping centre called Lindau Park in the town we were staying. Although I've been there every summer for the past ten years or something, I'd never gone into a shop called New Yorker and I'm so glad I decided to venture there last week because the clothes they have are exactly my kind of thing. That being said, I only bought two items because of the cost and also a lack of suitcase space. This post is about probably my favourite of the two pieces, a navy lacy top.

I can tell you now I won't be wearing it with that grey skirt (charity shop, £4.50) but it happened to be out pn my floor (oops) so I decided to wear it for the photos. If you've read some of my other recent posts, you might see I'm really into lacy clothes at the moment so the sleeves are my favourite thing about this. I also really like navy clothes, making this a perfect combo for a top. I'll probably end up wearing it to school with jeans; I do realise it's a bit dressy but hey, sometimes it's nice to make an effort. Also, I think it's quite a flattering cut, being a bit looser on the tummy which is what I need! Haha, but honestly, things either make me look like I'm wearing a tent, or they show off every little imperfection which isn't particularly great. This strikes a nice balance though.

I hope these little outfit posts are okay. I'm not intentionally trying to be a wannabe fashion/beauty blogger but I've been buying a lot of clothes and cosmetics lately so that's what I'll be writing about for another week or so. On another note, it's my first day working at McDonald's tomorrow, agh! I'm kind of excited but also nervous. I'll be working for eight hours (11am - 7pm) which is a bloody long time and I'm worried I may miss the start of Strictly Come Dancing (please God, no!) but overall, I'm looking forward to it. I hope you all have a wonderful Friday night.

Revlon: Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain

We've had half days at school this week for some reason so I've been popping into town with my friends each day afterwards to Boots. One of my friends is absolutely obsessed with practically ever makeup brand they sell there and she can't go in without spending at least a tenner. She's such a bad influence! She dragged me in there (not unwillingly, I might add) and we happened to see that Revlon had an offer on; any two products for £10. It was such good value that I thought it would be a bit of a waste not to make the most of it. I've been after another lip butter for ages (post coming soon) and they're usually £8 so it made sense to pick up something else too. I've been hearing a lot about the Clinique Chubby Sticks and the copies of them by Revlon and Bourjois so I decided this was my chance.

I've always loved the look of an orange lip but never really got round to buying any orange lipsticks, or I thought it would be too bright and chickened out. Not on Tuesday though, on Tuesday I was brave, and plumped for a balm stain in the colour Rendezvous.

It's early days but I think I really do like the colour, plus it's pretty moisturising which is always nice. Has anyone tried the Clinique or Bourjois ones? I'd love to know how different they are to this.

Tell him that I miss our little talks

This is a bit of a hard post to write and I know I'm going to seem really naive and stupid by the end of it but I kind of feel like I want to get this all down in one place for me to read back on in the future. It's going to be rambly and all about one particular person, so feel free to stop reading now and save yourself five minutes of your life because the chances of this all making sense are slim. I'm writing about something which began (and with hindsight, I see it also ended) in April of this year so it's not so fresh any more. Or as one of my friends put it, not so "raw" any more. I suppose that's true; I'm kind of getting over it more as time goes on.

On Tuesday 9th April 2013 my parents were at work and my brother was out with his friends. It was the second (and final) week of the Easter holidays and my seventeenth birthday was four days away. I was bored out of my mind, so I decided to pay a trip to Omegle at about two in the afternoon and see if I could meet anyone funny or have a really interesting conversation with a total stranger. I don't really remember if I spoke to anyone before I stumbled across a boy who looked about my age. He was sitting in a blue bedroom, had crazy curly hair and was wearing nice woolly jumper. His name was J (well, not really but I don't think I want to put his real name on here), he was seventeen but was in the school year above, and lived in Hertfordshire. We later worked out we live 42 miles apart (and number what does everyone know is the meaning of life?!). We spoke non-stop for an hour and half until he admitted he was an hour late meeting his friends and should probably leave to see them. And I know it sounds so cliched and naive and everything, but I felt like he was one of the first people who really got me. I almost felt like we were the same person. We added each other on facebook just before he left and he asked for my number.

This is the part where I come off as bloody stupid because I gave my number to a guy who I'd known via webcam for less than two hours. I also want to make clear that he was and still is one of the nicest people I know (even though that may contradict what I later write) and he was never at all slimy or sleazy. When he came back home that night, we facebook messaged for about four hours. By the end of the day, we'd exchanged 2000 facebook messages about literally everything; facts about ourselves, most embarrassing stories, religious views, favourite songs. It was mad. Needless to say I didn't sleep that night because I was thinking about him non-stop.

The next day, it was pretty much the same thing. I woke up to a text from him saying "Middle name?" and maybe it sounds stupid, but it made me smile a lot. We spoke for about eight hours that day too. In the evening, he hinted that perhaps we could meet up soon. I was so up for it and told him so. I also said "this is so crazy, we only met yesterday!" to which he replied "I know, but some people just click, eh?" And it was so true: if soul mates exist, that was it. We even joked about it, how we should get married because we were practically the same person. I suggested we could meet up at the end of May because I would be starting hardcore revision for my exams soon and I'd be free by the end of May. So he said yep, that sounds like a good idea. I went to bed pretty late that night because we spoke for so long, but I got a text from him: "I know it's ridiculously fast and short notice, but what about Friday?" And, again, I know it's stupidly cheesy but I immediately knew I wanted to. I called my best friend (oh what a cliche) and we had a quick confab before deciding there was nothing to lose by going.

On Thursday, J and I spoke on the phone for the first time. I'm not always that good on the phone so I was surprised at how easy it was to talk to him and at how light and casual the conversation was. There was never an awkward pause and it just made me think even more that he was the perfect guy. And, you know what, a part of me still does believe that. I think this whole episode was the first time I've honestly thought that everything could work out with someone and could see nothing which could go wrong. We arranged to meet at 11am at Euston the next day. His mum is, from what I've heard, the most relaxed parent on the planet so he told her he was off to meet a girl he'd been talking to online for two days and she literally just asked him what he wanted for dinner when he got back. My mother would have flipped out, so being stereotypical sneaky teenager, I told her I was off to Camden with aforementioned best friend for a little shopping trip. I was beyond excited and it was that lovely fizzy-tummy kind of excitement.

The next day I headed to my nearest tube station to jump on the Northern Line to Euston. It didn't really take long and I was there at 10.35am, so I read the Great Gatsby until J texted to say he'd arrived. I watched him walk through the sea of people in the station and it felt like a movie moment (as he'd say, "movie-esk"). We were both grinning like idiots. He looked exactly how I'd pictured him but one of the first things I remember him asking was "am I a disappointment?" I think he was asking it jokingly, but there's a semblance of truth behind most jokes. I also remember thinking I didn't want to ask him if I was a disappointment in case I didn't like the answer. We stepped out into Central London and walked and talked and joked the whole way. Every time we reached a corner or a different road, we would ask each other "right or left?" and took totally random streets. We wound up in a little park in a very upmarket, posh area (I still have no idea what it was called!) and sat on one of the benches. It started to rain so we snuggled up under my umbrella and chatted for another hour. I felt like I was in a film and found it hard to believe I'd know him for less than three days.

Once the rain stopped, we started walking again. We reached a little map block which looked like this:

... and found out we were only a couple of miles from Camden so we decided to walk there. We kept getting lost and usually I hate not knowing where I am but with him, it didn't matter at all. Ah, how cheesy. After about forty minutes, we ended up on Camden High Street and stopped off in Subway and KFC for lunch. Then we looked around the markets and it looked like J was in heaven. He spent about twenty minutes trying on jumpers and jackets but he's one of those really indecisive people when it comes to shopping and it turned out he didn't buy any of it. We walked down to Camden Lock afterwards and did more window shopping. I showed him one of my favourite little shops there and he insisted on buying me an early birthday present. I'm pretty sure he wanted to spend more than £2 but I hate when people buy me things: I just feel indebted to them. So he got me two boxes of Nag Champa incense which is my all time favourite although the scent just kind of reminds me of him now. It smells fab nevertheless.

It was getting a bit late by then, considering I had to be home at 5.30pm for a planning meeting for Brownies but we popped into a second hand bookshop and looked around for a while. I persuaded J to buy One Day by David Nichols because it's an amazing book and I thought he'd like it. I bought The India House by William Palmer for myself. We walked back to Euston the way we came (i.e. a three mile route). I've since found out it's less than a mile's walk from Camden to Euston down one long straight road, oops. Back at the station we had a ridiculous number of long hugs before I hopped on my tube and he on his train back to Hertfordshire.

Just before I arrived home I got a text from him saying "you make a very good first impression Katherine". Is it really lame I still have that text? That I kept it? Yeah, probably. We continued talking every day for a week after meeting in person but it was for shorter periods each day, and then one day, we didn't talk at all. It was like this for a couple of weeks. Since the very first Omegle day, the longest we'd gone without chatting was probably something stupid like twelve hours so it was a bit, I don't know.. a bit of a shock to the system. And, although I got texts from him a once a week, maybe letting me know what he thought of One Day, or just saying "yo", all of a sudden I was the one making the effort. I'm not saying we should have spoken every day, but I think, especially when it's someone who doesn't live close or who doesn't go to your school, you should perhaps give them more than a ten minute facebook conversation once a week.

I honestly couldn't work him out. I still don't know what his game was. After the Camden day, he'd even invited me up to his house, saying it would be fab to spend the day together there. I get that he's probably coming off as a total dick right now, but it's hard for me to see him that way because of the first couple of weeks I knew him. He made a very good first impression too. It's true what they say about that, that a first impression lasts a lifetime. I'll always see him as one of the sweetest guys I ever met, totally selfless and gentlemanly and generous.

Our conversations, both on the phone and on facebook, became less and less frequent. He said he'd get back to me properly after his exams finished in mid-late June, and I thought that's fair enough, the guy's got to revise. So we left it for about a month and, true to his word, he got back in contact the day his exams finished. Except he began ignoring my messages after a little while, yet was still online. Perhaps I sound like a bit of a stalker here and a bit annoying, but I was actually pretty laid back about it all. I would have minded a whole lot less had he not made promises that we were going to meet up again, had he not talked about a long term friendship. Had he not led me on. We haven't spoken properly in over two months and considering I've known him for less than five months, that's a bloody long time.

I'm a big believer in signs, or fate, or whatever you want to call it. The fact I thought to myself that first day on Omegle "if the next person is no good, I'll make my lunch now" and that J was the next person, and that he hadn't been on there in three years but picked the same day I did to go on it. The fact that his town has only a few thousand people there yet I visited it a year ago, and that his older brother lives just a couple of miles from me. That from his front door to my front door is 42 miles. But for me, the biggest sign is the books. I have close to three hundred books in my bedroom, all ordered alphabetically on my shelves by the author's last name. When J and I met, I was reading the Great Gatsby and he was reading Shades of Grey (not 50, don't worry!). These two books, by some coincidence, sit side by side on my shelf. In the Camden book shop, I bought The India House, while he bought One Day. And again, the two of them sit next to each other. I like that. Even if J and I don't talk anymore, it was a pretty magical month when we were close and I like to have a reminder of that.

I see now that we were both just bored in the Easter holidays and that this was something fun to do. I get now that I was just a bit of entertainment for him and although he talked as if this was for the long run, he didn't mean it. Even though I understand, it didn't stop me feeling hurt by it. By him. I definitely wasn't in love and it definitely wasn't heart break but I did care about him a lot and it's sad not to have him in my life anymore. I feel like he disappeared from my life as quickly as he seemingly magically appeared in it. The boy on the screen.

J, you introduced me to this song and, you know what, I do miss our little talks. A lot.

Miley 2.0

I do apologise for the lack of long posts, and for my seeming obsession with Blurred Lines and its disgusting, sexist, degrading message (oops, there I go again) but I stumbled across this article by a fab lady named Sophia Bennett. It's all about Miley Cyrus, focusing primarily on her performance at the VMAs this year and is essentially everything I was trying to say when I wrote a post about her on here. I hope you like Bennett's post as much as I do. She's great.

Hey everyone, this is just a really quick post asking you all to sign this petition. I'll perhaps do a longer post later but it would be great if it could get all the signatures it needs. I'm not sure if there's a set goal yet but it's a step towards gender equality. Please please please.
